For nearly a century the Iron Guard was the pinnacle of military power in all of Sadr before the collapse of Al-Maisan after the tarrasque attack. To this day it is believed that individuals of the Guard still represent the epitome of combat prowess even though most have disappeared during the modern age of Talamh. Their skills had been unmatched for decades as they kept control over Astridious Az-Zubana’s Al-Maisan. Each member of the Guard had unique and frightening abilities and some were even bestowed or taught to the Guard by Az-Zubana herself.
Their abilities were further bolstered by the cutting edge of magical technology. A secret they carried with them wherever they have fled to. What is known about this technology is little, but it involved using raw elemental magic, gathered perhaps natural or by Az-Zubana herself, and binding it to metals or other mundane materials. This is a similar principle used in Airships, though the exact process may differ greatly. These empowered objects accelerated or enhanced the natural abilities of the Guard seemingly without a price, though some believe with the death of Az-Zubana, the twisted mechanics of this technology became unraveled, killing the Guard in the process. Whatever the case, there is nothing left to study. The technology lost with Astridious’s death.
Members of the Guard were hand selected from all walks of life and based purely on ability and malleability. They were stripped of their former lives and given new identities. They were all but literal ghosts. In a war between Al-Maisan and Bodenolf they were heavily favored to claim victory in most combats despite the only modest numbers of their organization. There has never been an account of failure in battle, though this is disputable, as any records of defeat or death may have been covered up. Their total disappearance after the death of their ruler is still a mystery to this day, though one few are willing to pursue.
